Become a S.H.I.P.S. Mentor
Would you like to work with the youth in our community? There is nothing like individual one-on-one attention to help a student achieve academic goals and set high aspirations for themselves. Whether the student's needs are social, emotional, or educational, your support, caring and time can make a difference in a child's life and school experience. Mentoring can also make a difference in your life - a very positive and rewarding difference!

What is a Mentor?
A mentor is an individual who spends quality time with a student. A mentor acts as a positive adult role model, a caring friend and a good listener in order to help their student make a successful transition toward adulthood. The goal of the program is to build student's self-esteem, inspire their hopes and dreams, and help increase academic achievement.

What Do You Need to Be a Mentor?
  • Are you a retiree, parent, professional, or community member who would like to share some of your time with a student?
  • Are you someone that would like to provide a positive role model for a student to enhance his/her chances for academic, personal and career success?
If so, then we would like you to become a mentor in our York Schools. We ask you to provide guidance and support to a student for just one hour a week during school time.

What Will We Provide You?
We will provide you with an orientation session, school tour, training and guidelines on how to be a successful mentor.

How Do I Get Involved?
The Mentor Program is part of the York Schools' Volunteer Program. The Coordinator recruits, interviews and places volunteers in the York School System with the concurrence of the school system administrations. Just fill out an application and criminal background check - return it to us and we will be in touch!
